Our Beautiful EldersBelow you will find resources that will help you design interviews and write your vignettes about the oldest people you know. You can also check the Padlet page to find additional resources. Remember that the interview (and transcript) are due 2/22, but the vignettes of the five chapters you write about this person are due 4/4. This page will help you with both.

Oldest Person You know assignment1. BRING a flash drive that contains your audio recording. Due: daily
2. Write the mini-memoir. Write a series of vignettes (a tiny portrait, episode in a person's life) that chronicles an elderly person’s life as it connects to four periods of time: (1) birth/childhood – (2) teenage/young adult – (3) adulthood – (4) current age. Focus on historical events within each decade. Focus on work within each decade, but also tell the stories as they connect to any topic where the conversation leads. Try to get at the heart of who the person was and is. Think about a particular body part to focus on as you interview the person - then think symbolically as you ask questions. For example, consider the song lyrics, "Grandma's Hands." When the songwriter thought of his grandmother's hands, it reminded him of particular incidents, and together, these incidents helped him see her hands as symbols of love, wisdom, protection, etc. Due: February 22nd, before midnight (audio recording + interview notes…would be wise to start writing the five vignettes while fresh in your mind, as these are due April 4th (see Mango) . PUT YOUR NAME ON ALL FILES: AUDIO + WORD DOCUMENT. Please continue to send files to my Dropbox. The Mini-Memoir of the Oldest Person You Know (the Vignettes patterned after Mango) are due April 4th - when the entire project will be finished. |
